Pa Akindayomi, the founder of RCCG, was born in July 1909 in Ondo State, Nigeria where he grew up surrounded by idol worshipers, but he knew there was another greater power and yearned to know God. And this pursuit led him to the Church Missionary Society where he was baptized in 1927 but still spiritually unfulfilled, he then joined the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in 1931. Pa Akindayomi began to hear the voice of God saying “you will be my servant” but he ignored it. This went on for years and all his businesses and ventures all failed, and he ran into debt and eventually surrendered himself to God saying, ‘Lord I will go wherever you want me to go.’ He got confirmation through the Bible passages of Jeremiah 1:4-10, Isaiah 41:10-13 and Romans 8:29-31 and The Lord assured him of providing for his needs.
He married in 1941 and continued to worship with Cherubim and Seraphim but in 1947, he started feeling that the Church was departing from the Word of God and by 1952 he felt persuaded to leave the church and started a prayer group (Ogo Oluwa Prayer Group) at Willoughby Street, Ebute Meta, Lagos, Nigeria. He also had a vision of words that appeared to be written on a blackboard which were ‘The Redeemed Christian Church of God’, giving birth to the Church in 1952. In the early 70’s God spoke to Pa Akindayomi about his successor, described how his successor looked like and so a young University lecturer joined in 1973, Papa recognized him in the spirit.
This man, Enoch Adejare Adeboye who was then, a lecturer of Mathematics at the University of Lagos soon became involved in the church and became one of the interpreters translating sermons from Yoruba to English and was ordained a Pastor in 1975. Papa was preparing to meet his Creator and sent for Pastor Adeboye and spent hours sharing details of the covenant and the plans of The Lord for the church and at the age of 71, Papa died, and Pastor Adeboye’s appointment was formalized. An explosion began with number of parishes growing since 1981 and on the international scene.
The RCCG is currently active across continents with thousands of parishes which over 700 are in the United Kingdom and today, God is doing marvellous deeds through The RCCG worldwide and will keep increasing until our Lord comes. One of the well-known programs of the church is The Holy Ghost Service which holds on the first Friday of every month at the Redemption Camp, km 46 Lagos-Ibadan expressway and the Holy Ghost Service now holds in different parts of the world.
